Dare to Differ: Inclusive and Innovative Languages Education

As a lover of stories, I was deeply moved by the recent Student Discussion Panel featuring students from Al-Taqwa College in Melbourne, Australia. Their reflections as young filmmakers, sharing the journeys behind their visual storytelling, brought the Modern Language Teachers' Association of Victoria (MLTAV) 2024 Conference theme, Dare to Differ: Inclusive and Innovative Languages Education, to life in the most raw and inspiring way.

A common thread ran through their stories—a profound understanding, appreciation, and respect for their home languages and cultures. They spoke passionately about the importance of keeping these connections strong and alive, not only for themselves but for future generations.

Listening to their voices reminded me that, as teachers, we also become students. Their insights reminded me of the importance of stepping back, listening, and learning from the perspectives of our multilingual learners.

I am incredibly grateful to the students for sharing their stories.
